USA Freediving safety

A national page with one first rule: do not dive alone, as a beginner or as a professional.

This wiki is not a course. Water skills belong with a qualified instructor and a trained buddy.

USA Freediving is the US member of AIDA. Their safety page tells you to learn in person with a qualified instructor. They keep a public list of schools and instructors. They do not sponsor the names on that list.

If you cannot reach a school yet, they point to Ted Harty's free safety course. That course still says it is not a substitute for an in-person class.

Their avoid-problems list is short. Use kit that fits the site. Warm up. Do not dive when you are ill or tired. Add depth slowly. Equalise properly. Stay positively buoyant at the surface. Stay in arm's reach of your buddy when they surface.
